About Dr. Winner

Dr. Joel Winner, M.D. obtained a bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as an undergaduate; then studied medicine at  the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.   Dr. Winner continued in his studies of general psychiatry with a four-year residency at the University of Hawaii, scoring in the top 3 percent of psychiatry residents on the Psychiatric Resident In Training Exam (PRITE). 

Dr. Winner developed an interest in looking at patient symptoms in the context of the family and system and spent an extended period during his residency training in a family-systems approach, working with youth and their families. Dr. Winner continues to believe in and use this family-systems approach in his practice. 

Returning to the mainland, Dr. Winner then worked as a consultant psychiatrist at the Mayo Clinic as part of the “Gene Team.”  His focus was both research and clinical work in pharmacogenetics.   Dr. Winner was one of the first physicians to research and utilize an algorithm to help interpret genetic information through AssureRx, a personalized medicine company affiliated with the Mayo Clinic and Cincinnati Children's Hospital.  Dr. Winner is now the medical director of AssureRx.  Dr. Winner has given grand rounds (i.e. talks to other physicians and therapists) on the interplay between genetics and psychiatry.  In addition he has done research on the training of psychiatrists about clinical genetics and genomics, with an upcoming publication in the professional journal Academic Psychiatry. 

 Dr. Winner is board certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry (ABPN).
 
Dr. Winner has his “dream” practice in Boulder, Colorado.  The goal of the practice is to help patients and their families regain control over their problems and/or illnesses and to optimize their psychological, spiritual, social, and family life.
